    Biography

SEPH Tyrell is an apologetically authentic R&B-pop artist from Maryland, Blending soulful vocals, and a bouncy but smooth sound rooted in his identity as a gay Black man he's amplifying gay sexuality. Born Joseph Wallenmaier, SEPH's journey to music was forged during the isolation of the COVID-19 lockdown. Originally pursuing a career in acting, SEPH had been accepted into the prestigious AMDA conservatory but was unable to attend. When the world shut down, and community college felt like a dead end, SEPH dropped out and leaned fully into the one thing that had always been his outlet: music.

Music runs deep in his blood—especially through his grandfather, a celebrated reggae artist of the '80s and '90s. From watching his grandfather's VHS tapes on repeat to obsessing over vinyl covers with cool motorcycles and dreadlocks, SEPH always felt connected to that legacy. But it wasn’t until he heard his own music that something truly clicked. “I’m my own favorite artist,” he admits. “When I hear myself, or watch my performances, I feel driven to keep going. That confidence is part of my power.”

Blending R&B and pop with heavy influences of soul, sensuality, fun, and heartbreak, SEPH's music feels like digestible poetry wrapped in catchy melodies and complex vocals. He uses his platform to speak boldly about queerness, love, ego, and emotional vulnerability—especially in spaces where those conversations are often avoided. His music reflects the tension and beauty of being both masculine and feminine, sexy and emotional, confident and honest. His breakthrough single Lick Back marks a defining moment in his artistry: “It was the first time I put out a song and had no doubts about it. Everything—vocals, lyrics, layers—just felt like a masterpiece.”

On stage, SEPH is electric. He blends strong choreography, vocal acrobatics, and magnetic stage presence into every performance. From clubs in West Hollywood to festivals across Los Angeles, SEPH commands attention even in rooms where he's been dismissed before stepping on stage. “I've had people walk out the moment I hit the stage—but they always end up glancing back,” he says. “My existence challenges norms. That’s why I go harder.”

SEPH Tyrell isn't here to play it safe—he's here to redefine what it means to be a Black male artist. He’s building a movement, not just a fanbase. His goal is to bring visibility to gay Black men, encourage emotional expression in the Black community, and show that artistry and vulnerability are not contradictions. “I just want to be happy and help other people find that too. I want Black men to feel free to be who they are—beyond what society has told them they’re allowed to be.”
